Real Madrid-City, Bayern-Atleti To Meet In Champions League Semis

Apr 16, 2016 2:53 PM

Real Madrid will play Manchester City in the semifinals of the Champions League, while Atletico Madrid drew Bayern Munich.

This marks the first time City has reached the Final Four of the competition.

Real Madrid last won the Champions League in 2014 when they defeated Atleti, while Bayern won in 2013 one season before Pep Guardiola arrived.

While there are certainly intriguing "narrative" possibilities for the final, the semifinal draw avoided the more intriguing possibilities such as Pep Guardiola managing against his future club (Manchester City) or his lifelong rival (Real Madrid). The possibility of two Madrid derbys with Real and Atleti meeting was also avoided.

Leicester City Clinches Spot In Champions League

Apr 14, 2016 10:41 AM

Leicester City have officially qualified for Champions League football with their 2-0 win over Sunderland and Manchester United's 3-0 defeat to Spurs.

Leicester cannot finish any worse than fourth, though they remain favorites to win the Premier League title outright.

The Foxes last played in Europe in the 2000-01 UEFA Cup.

If Leicester win the Premier League they will be seeded in next season's Champions League group stage draw along with the champions of Spain, Germany, Italy, France, Portugal, Russia and the title holders.

There is no chance that Leicester could be robbed of a place in the Champions League if Manchester City and Liverpool win the Champions League and Europa League respectively. If both clubs lift the European trophies, and both finish outside the top four, then fourth in the Premier League drops into the Europa.
